BQ vs Self-Contain vs Studio: Which Lagos Rental Suits You?

Confused by BQ, self-contain and studio? Here is exactly what each one means in Lagos, what they cost, and who they are best for.

What each one actually means

These three terms get used loosely, but there are real differences:

  • BQ (boys' quarters): a small self-contained unit built within the compound of a larger house - room, bathroom, kitchenette.
  • Self-contain: a standalone private unit with its own room, bathroom and kitchen, not necessarily attached to a main house.
  • Studio: an open-plan single unit where living, sleeping and kitchen share one space, usually a more modern build.

Side by side

All three give you a private, affordable home. The practical differences:

  • Location: a BQ sits inside an existing compound (often more secure); self-contains and studios can be anywhere.
  • Layout: studios are open-plan; BQs and self-contains are usually partitioned.
  • Feel: studios tend to be newer and more modern; BQs are the most traditional.

Which is right for you?

Choose a BQ if security and being inside an established compound matter most. Choose a self-contain for the widest choice and lowest prices. Choose a studio if you want a more modern, open layout and will pay a little more for it.

What they cost

All three sit at the affordable end of the Lagos market and are priced similarly - location and condition matter more than the label. Always confirm exactly what is included before you compare prices.

Pick safely

Whichever you choose, the safety rules are identical: inspect first, verify the landlord, get it in writing, and pay through escrow so your deposit is protected until you move in.
